Trade stuff to watch
posted in 2008 season, trade rumors |Dave Dombrowski says the Tigers won’t be sellers and probably won’t be buyers.
Sellers
- Can they improve by selling? The Dodgers’ meddling owner may be targetting Edgar Renteria, according to SI’s Jon Heyman. Is it really selling if the team improves by trading away an underperforming shortstop? Heyman’s report brings up the names Jack Wilson and Orlando Cabrera. I’m guessing Cabrera is unavailable, as the White Sox seem to be doing pretty good right now. So do ou want Renteria or Ramon Santiago? This year, you want Santiago. But can he keep it up his fine play at the plate when he’s playing daily? I guess there’s only one way to find out.
- Gary Sheffield may be shopped as well, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports. Sheff seems to be playing ever-so-slightly better lately. And as much as I like Matt Joyce, I do wonder if the opposing teams will figure him out. Of course even then, he’s liable to hit better than Sheff. I’d be OK with “selling” Sheff, too.
- If the Tigers are really not in the race, they face the question of trading Pudge Rodriguez for some sort of prospects package to a team that needs the catcher, or hanging on to him and offering him arbitration this offseason. At Detroit Tigers Thoughts, Eddie tells us Pudge would be a Type A free agent. If he declined arbitration, the Tigers would get an additional first-round pick and a first/second round sandwich pick. If he accepted it, he might be paid a bit less. So it’s kind of a no-lose deal given the lack of a true successor. So, it’s probably best if they keep him no matter what.
Buyers
- Quick thoughts here: Do the Tigers have the prospects to trade to buy? Even if they do, should they trade prospects, given how barren the shelf is getting? I say no.
- One name bandied about is George Sherrill, the Orioles’ closer. According a report from the Baltimore Sun (via MLB Trade Rumors), the Orioles want two or three prospects. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel adds, the O’s would like a shortstop.
- Hmm, Renteria? Somehow I doubt it. Santiago? Maybe. But I’d rather keep Santiago and lose Renteria, myself. Given the Tigers are looking for a long-term shortstop themselves, this is probably not a trade partner I’d expect.
- I don’t think the Tigers should trade for Sherrill anyway.
I think they just stand pat. It would be great to go get a starter, but you know there’s just not enough to use as bait. Maybe take a run at a Jay’s starter? But you know they’re going to want stuff the Tigs don’t have.
Mostly I think we should just put on the hats with the siren on top and realize that the next three weeks decide the season.
Flying J, based on your replies here, I thought your hat would look more like this:
Lord knows how many rights violations I made in doing that 10 minute photoshop for ya! Hope this blog isn’t too popular…
I’d love to see the Tigers pick up another starter (Renteria and anyone the Dodgers want for Derek Lowe anyone?) but I don’t think it’s likely to happen. Miner should do just fine for us anyways. We really need Robertson to step it up.
Kurt,
(1) WOW The hat is awesome
(2) WOW That loss is awful
(3) WOW Was that the season slinking away?
Bartender give me three bottles of gin and two hats.
