Game 76: Sheff returns to homer
posted in 2008 season |Cardinals 8
Tigers 4
Recap:
- The Tigers hit three homers but lost 8-4.
- The Tigers had nine hits but lost 8-4.
- Gary Sheffield blasted a two-run homer in the seventh.
- Miguel Cabrera and Ivan Rodriguez also homered earlier.
- So what happened? Freddy Dolsi couldn’t slam the door on the mess Kenny Rogers started, and Dolsi dropped over himself. So the Tigers gave up three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings and pretty much fell out of the game.
- Kenny left the bases loaded in the sixth. Dolsi led two of the runs in before escaping the inning. Dolsi started off the seventh by giving up three straight singles before Casey Fossum relieved him. That didn’t go much better, as he allowed a double.
Analysis:
- Ay yi yi. Glad I didn’t see this one.
- Good news to see Gary Sheffield hit a home run. Bad news that he still isn’t getting hits when the ball stays in the park. Of course, that is the same thing that Marcus Thames has been doing lately. So yeah, we’ll take home runs. But some singles, doubles or triples would be welcome, too.
- But Joe reports in my comments Sheff brought some thunder. Hope he keeps bringing it.

Ugly ugly ugly….
Any thoughts that Rogers was really getting squeezed on the strike zone?
Due to work I didn’t see any of the game, FJ, so I’m not in position to comment.
Thought he was getting a bit squeezed, but he gave up a lot of base hits and he just never looked sharp.
Actually, it didn’t get ugly until the bullpen came along. Kenny got within two outs of a quality start. 2 of his 5 earned were scored when Dolsi came into the game.
I thought Leyland did a poor job in the 7th to just let Dolsi go out and give up a bunch of baserunners before taking him out. Seems like Skip kind of just gave up on the game.
