7 questions about 2008
posted in 2008 season |Let me note up top and that I am not arguing for these things, yet.
I’m just asking:
- WHAT THE SAM HELL IS GOING ON??!
- At what point is manager Jim Leyland’s job in question as he leads a $138M winless team he repeatedly claims “isn’t ready” and states, “That’s the manager’s fault.”
- When does a World Series season off to a bad start become a World Series season in peril?
- Further, when does a World Series season in peril become a season with no hope of a World Series?
- And finally, what if they were never really a World Series caliber team?
- Will this nightmare ever end?
- Which Tigers are most easily tradable for quality prospects?
Bonus question:
- SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE SAM HELL IS GOING ON??!!?
Update: Big Al answered the questions.

I can’t imagine Leyland getting fired, unless this team starts to approach the 1988 Orioles (and they’re 1/3 of the way there).
Now I CAN imagine him quitting, if he thinks he’s not getting through to these guys.
Remarkable data (and the only thing that will allow we to go to sleep tonight):
The guys putting money down on this stuff at tradesports.com still give the Tigers about a 41 percent chance of winning the division and rank them as the 4th best shot to win the World Series.
So we’re still a ways off from writing off the season.
But I have absolutely no idea what the Sam Hell is going on . . .
I wish I had the answer to what is going wrong, But I don’t even think that Sam Hell does. There is not a part of the game they are even doing right! They cant pitch, field, hit or even run.
Whats going on actually I haven’t got a clue????!!!????
Secondly Leyland will quite first before he gets fired.
Third, Trading for prospects even though if we are at that point in the season i cant imagine DD getting rid of this team. So none this year. Now next year DD will either be fired if this happens again or the team will be dismantled.
PS If i had to choose a Trade partner, it’d be the Dodgers they have loads of awesome young talent. And id trade Inge or Thames, or Sheff or Pudge.
But Steve, say this team is still floundering at the trade deadline and somebody out there needs a catcher — maybe jorge posada’s shoulder injury in new york is serious. Pudge is on his last year of his contract. I should think he’s tradable. No one of great import is really in their last year, but maybe some team really likes Gary Sheffield. Would he be tradable? Outside those two guys, I don’t think anyone is. Nor do I think there’s reason to tear up the team. And if team tearing is needed, I still keep DD.
Leyland, I don’t know. If I’m Mike Illitch and I spent 140M for poor results … I’m just sayin’. I’m not sure it’s as unlikely a scenario as some think.
The 1988 Orioles 0-21 start was hard to figure out, but with the talent your Tigers have, there’s no need to quit, fire or trade anyone. It will all come around when the Tigers get into their groove and build a good chemistry. Just pray no one gets hurt.
I dig your style Kurt, I’m at a loss as well. It’s time to see some movement of some kind. If the movement isn’t in winning games then it is in changing who makes up the team.
My best explanation is that somehow Matt Millen or William Clay Ford came in to give a motivational speech just before the season started.
I’ve been a huge Jim Leyland fan back to his days of chewing out Barry Bonds as the skipper of the Pittsburgh Pirates, but you’re right, it is his job to get this team ready and to motivate them… and obviously this isn’t getting done. Unfortunately, a speech similar to the one he gave at the beginning of 2006 might not work on this group of guys. I agree with some of the other comments in that I think Leyland will quit before his gets fired.
