SS problem solved with trade for Renteria

posted in 2007-08 offseason, trades |

Tigers motto: Win NOW.

I’m probably the last Tigers blog to get a post up, so there’s no facts I can add. The Tigers traded SP Jair Jurrjens and CF prospect Gorkys Hernandez to Atlanta for SS Edgar Renteria, a move I hoped they’d make.

Obviously, it’s a pretty hefty price to pay from the future. Imagining a 2010 outfield of Cameron Maybin, Goryks Hernandez and Curtis Granderson will have to stop. But that doesn’t really bother me much. He was always trade bait.

I was just getting used to having Jair Jurrjens around. He’s a good young kid at 21. Doesn’t get stressed on the mound. He was part of the Tigers reloading their young staff.

I would have been happier if say, Dallas Trahern was the pitcher selected for the trade. Just sorta throwing potential toward the Braves, not throwing a proven major league guy.

For any Braves fans who might be stopping by, I’ll say this: I think you finally got a trade with the Tigers that won’t blow up in your face. I’d feel pretty good about receiving those two guys if I were you.

So how do I feel as a Tigers fan? Pretty good to have Renteria. Pretty optimistic overall, because I really can’t think of too many times a Dombrowski trade has cost the Tigers. Maybe the players didn’t work out great every time, but you know what? I can’t think of any times Detroit ended up on the losing side of a trade.

The other issue is the money owed to Renteria and what else the Tigers might have done with it. Any ideas from you Tiger guys? But for certain a Renteria/Guillen combo is better than Guillen/Casey — better offense AND defense. What’s the story with Chris Shelton? Should non-Tigers fans like me just forget about him already?

Salary info. He’s owed 9M in 2008 but I remember reading 3M is covered by Boston. There’s an extension possible in 2009 for 11.5M?

What would they have spent that on? A short stop. That was pretty much necessary and going to be part of the budget anyway. So I don’t think it precludes the other moves they’d have made. If they kept Guillen at SS, they’d have had to get a 1B, and that would probably have cost about the same anyway.

Shelton, you shouldn’t forget totally. Maybe forget him in the Olde english D. I think he can hit, but he won’t be part of the 40 man roster next season. Could be a Carlos Pena figure, suddenly showing up with a great season for someone else.

I dunno, the one we did in ‘87 worked out pretty well for both teams, but probably more for us.

I was like 8 for that one. It doesn’t count. Thanks for dropping by!

I’m also a Braves fan but with family ties
to Detroit so I like the Tigers. I think Tiger fans will enjoy
having Edgar Renteria. He’s a real pro and,
while he doesn’t have great range anymore
he makes all the plays. Seems like a good
    trade for both teams.

The Farnsworth trade wasn’t all that bad for the Braves. They gave up on Miner/Colon, 2 mediocre hard throwers, for a good half season as closer by Farnsworth and 2 picks when the Yankees signed him.

Honestly I really screwed up how I wrote that at the time, but OK.

I didn’t think the Farnsworth deal helped the Braves all that much. He pitched fine, but I guess maybe it seems more worth it from their standpoint than mine. Fair enough.

The Smoltz thing? That’s 20 years. Get past it. The Tigers finally did. I mean, if you start looking at 20, 30, 50 years of history, pretty much any statement is going to be proven wrong. I’m looking at the past 5.
