Giving Granderson his due

posted in 2007-08 offseason |

A frequent commenter on the site, Sky, has a great blog of his own that I hope everyone has checked out, Skyking 162. Sky is a former writer at Fangraphs and consistently has entertaining, informative content.

One thing I’ve noticed at his blog is a definite, statistical-driven respect for our own Curtis Granderson. To wit, his system of grading believes Curtis Granderson is the A.L. MVP, or at least, right up there with Alex Rodriguez when you include defense.

Do I really think Granderson’s fielding talent is that good — enough to catch ARod? Not sure, but I figured I’d leave him up there just to get that discussion going.

Anyway, that’s just the setup. Sky’s most recent post compared proven star Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies (NL MVP?) with “rising star” Granderson. He uses weighted on-base average and the number of outs created to come up with which player was more valuable, concluding

[B]oth Rollins and Granderson created a lot of runs. But you also have to account for how many outs were used up to create those runs. If you give at-bats to a scrub player he’ll still create a few runs.

And while we’re at it, Grandy also got his due from USA Today for his appearance during the NLCS on TBS.

Detroit Tigers outfielder-turned analyst Curtis Granderson has been the funniest studio analyst outside of host Ernie Johnson. After the burly Thomas demonstrated how to bunt, Granderson cracked: “OK, who’s going to run for him now?”

Thanks for the link, guys. Regarding Granderson’s fielding — the ratings I used for the post where he was ranked above ARod was IN LOVE with Curtis’ range. After incorporating another system, I’m more sure ARod was the better player. But Granderson might be #2. (That’s what happens when you start posting numbers before you’re done tweaking things ; )
