Bunt Singles June 24: Debating

What’s scarier about the Tigers? The pitcher?

At least once per game when Justin Verlander pitches, Tigers first baseman Sean Casey hears the same comment from someone lucky enough to reach base.

“They will say, ‘He has the nastiest stuff I’ve ever seen,’ ” Casey said. (Freep)

“My god, that guy’s throwing 100 miles an hour in the sixth inning,” (Chipper) Jones said. “You’re not going to mount much against him. It’s really tough for the best hitters in baseball to put that in play consistently.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Or the offense that leads all of baseball by nearly 50 runs and will likely pass 500 by the All-Star Break? Your call.

The pitching has improved!

The Tigers have a team ERA of 4.45. Ugly. In May, it was 4.88. Really ugly.

But so far in June, it’s 4.26, fifth in A.L. Obviously, that’ s not real great. But with a few changes in the bullpen and rotation, I think the downward trend will continue. Maybe not the 2.83 of the last 7 days, but certainly, I think it will look more like the 3s than the 4s going forward.

Break up the Nationals!

The Indians just lost 2 of 3 to theWashington Nationals. Earlier this month, they dropped 2 of 3 to the Braves and Reds too. They’re 9-12 in June.

The Twins also lost 2-of-3 to the Nats in interleague play. Otherwise, they’ve generally taken 2-of-3 ever series, except against the Milwaukee Brewers. Minnesota is 10-10 this month.

The Cubs just swept the White Sox. I’m pretty sure I watched parts of all three games. The White Sox are as awful as the standings and statistics would indicate.

I have no clue what the Royals are doing but I don’t figure that it matters either way. The Nats didn’t play them.
