Tigers news and views on a busy news day

One Zumaya good, two Zumayas better?

The draft was a family affair. Some familiar family names were called today, as Colin Kaline, Wade Lamont, Matt Robertson and Richard Zumaya. Those weren’t just names. They actually were the grandson, son and brothers, respectively, of Al Kaline, Gene Lamont, Nate and Joel. (Hat tip Danny Knobler) Those late rounds seem like throwaways.  Kaline is going to play college ball, his grandpap says.

But I was reminded of this sketch at The Dugout.

Any Zumaya good

Jim Leyland opened a can of worms this afternoon by telling Detroit sports talk radio Zoomer wouldn’t be back this season. Then he started backpedaling. Whoops. He didn’t really mean Zumaya wouldn’t be back. He’s just preparing that way. Which is good. Zumaya can’t be treated like a silver bullet, packed away until his finger recovers. If he gets back, great. But you have to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Wilson gone for season

There was someone lost for the season: Vance Wilson. He had been taking rehab a rehab stint in Toledo. When he was recalled early, many people assumed he would be activated and Mike Rabelo sent to Toledo. Soon after, we learned that wasn’t the case. Wilson suffered a setback and will likely require surgery.

It’s too bad for Wilson, but it’s not a loss. Wilson knew more about catching, obviously, and Rabelo has made a few mental errors that I doubt Wilson would make, but we’re talking about a backup catcher here. Rabelo does fine at the plate and he doesn’t play much more than once a week anyway. No big deal. But get well soon, Vance.

Tiger Stadium to come tumbling down

Worse than it already is, anyway. So they say, anyway. I’ll believe it when I see it, anyway. Oh, the news. Yes. Tiger Stadium is set to be demolished in 2008. Big Al more or less mirrors my thoughts at The Wayne Fontes Experience.

Rogers to start rehabbing in Toledo

Knobler also reported Rogers may start his rehab stint as soon as Sunday, which makes you think he’ll probably be back in Detroit within a couple of weeks if he continues to find the successes he has. I don’t think anyone would have pegged him for a June start when he had the surgery to remove a blood clot in his throwing arm right before the season began.

Keeping pace

  • Magglio Ordonez is on pace for 79 doubles. This is a record-setting pace.
  • Curtis Granderson is on pace for 33 triples. This is below all-time record-setting but really darn good.
  • Speaking of Maggs, he’s not even home run leader on his team anymore. Gary Sheffield is up to 16, on pace for 44.

Side note

Christy Hammond at Behind The Jersey has been running a series of questions and answers with Detroit bloggers about what makes Detroit a good sports town. She happened to ask me to answer them. I kept forgetting to say: go over and check her site out for my responses!
