While I appreciate the lefties problem, didn't it seem likely that if Rogers was healthy, the rotation would have had 3 lefties?

Ultimately I'd like to see Rogers replace Maroth, but then what happens to Maroth? I don't want to see him in the bullpen.

There's a mess coming up.

Detroit's bullpen has been shaky all season. It started with Zumaya starting off the year not being his usual dominating self, and then Rodney giving up a bulk amount of runs and losing games. When those 2 guys began to struggle, I realized that Detroit's staff is in for a bit of a longer season this year because guys like Grilli or Miner/Seay/Ledezma/whoever are not as good as the 2 main setup guys.

It's still early, and just think, if Detroit's pen had been great like last year from Day 1 of this season, they'd be dominating the AL once again. Since the pen is not doing that great right now, I guess they'll have to settle for leading the wild card chase... their offense has picked up the slack thus far, just imagine once that pitching staff gets 100% healthy again... wow

Lefties...

Let's say Rogers comes back healthy within 6 weeks...That is 3 LH pitchers in the rotation that nibble. Either Maroth or Robertson have to go (in a trade or into the Bullpen). By the time Rogers gets back it could be too late. Miller is a power pitcher and has a totally different style.

I'd bet someone would pick up Grilli if he was available. There are teams who need pitching way more than the Tigers do. I haven't given up on Jason Grilli though.

I agree fully on Mesa. He needs to be gone; now. I believe Zach Miner could be important for the bullpen. Coming from a starting slot he could be a real innings-eater which is what they need. I suspect Miner will remain even after Rodney returns to action.

Another Texas reliever who interests me is Akinori Otsuka. I'd actually be more interested in him than Gagne, since he's shown he can do well in both the set-up and closer roles.

Thanks for commenting. Yah, Grilli'd be DFA'd and probably let go or sent to Toledo if he was okay with that. I doubt he'd be taken by anyone on waivers.

I completely agree with your bullpen assessment...

Even last year Grilli was shaky at best
He is a gas can who only seems to pitch decent when the Tigers are getting blown out

What are the options with him - outright release?
I doubt anyone would trade for him
