Links aplenty, I can’t keep up!

posted in 2007 season, link roundup |

Stories are popping out all over the place, but here’s my take on a few more interesting topics.

  • A year ago at this time, the number of Tigers blogs could probably have been counted on one hand. Mack Avenue Tigers was not even a gleam in my eye. But a successful season can make it fun again for fans as well as players, so Tigers blogs keep popping up. Good luck to all of the new ones! And be sure to e-mail me at kurt-at-mackavenuetigers.com if you have a Tigers blog you keep updated that isn’t listed on my sidebar, because that means I don’t know about it, but I’d like to. In any case, here are two nice new additions:

Talking Tigers — A Tigers exclusive from the author of Infinite Diablogue. It has nice profiles of many Tigers prospects listed by position. Great way to start! Also, be sure to check out his Tigers draft study.

Tigers Minors League Baseball Blog — Another new blog that looks at what is going on throughout the organization.

  • ESPN’s Tim Kurkijan looked at top rotations in baseball. He liked the Red Sox best. Go figure. Anyway, the Tigers came in as runners up again, which is a fine place to be.

As well, ESPN’s Sean McAdam looked at bullpens. Guess what? Tigers are runners up here, too. Sure, you’d love it if they got top props somewhere, but being No. 2 across a bunch of categories is pretty good, too, right?

  • Lynn Henning writes about Gary Sheffield’s positive attitude — thus far — and ponders whether the Tigers will track Alex Rodriguez. Oh, and he also thinks Thames could be traded. Lynn was busy on the plane ride down to central Florida!

I think — hope — Sheff will stay positive and productive in Detroit, given he wanted to play for Jim Leyland again and seems pretty happy about it.

A-Rod… I like as a batter. I understand the probable need for a shortstop in the future and the reason behind writing the column, but I really don’t see it happening.

And Thames? he just needs his at-bats. He needs to be around in case Sean Casey falls apart at first base. If, that is, Thames can play first base. That is the burning question of spring training if ever there was one. (Possibly the only one in Lakeland other than who could be the newest lefty specialist).

  • By the way, why do questions always have to burn? Why can’t they be intriguing? Bewildering? Or just, well, questions? Anyway, answering the flaming he feels, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports says the Diamondbacks are this years Tigers (DailyFungo Mike, weigh in!) and the winner of the AL Central is… who the heck knows. I like his honesty.
  • My first hat-tip of 2007 to Scott at The Cutoff Man, Athlon Sports likes the Tigers and previews them top to bottom at CNNSI.

Can they do it again? Before you answer that, remember that you never expected the Tigers to do it the first time. Getting back to the World Series won’t be easy, but with their pitching and their improved offense, no one should be surprised if the Tigers do get back there. One thing is certain: No one is going to ask whether they can finish above .500.

No counter analysis here. I’m just going to hope they’re right!

  • And thanks to Absolute Michigan for being so kind in their Spring Training Preview.
  • I made a few minor site changes to so my sidebars would be about the same length. You’ll wonder where the archives went, but I moved them to a link on the header rather than list all the months out. I may do a bit more with that. I’m bouncing around ideas like automatically searching by player name or something.
  • I think that’s all but this could be updated later today…
