Dombrowski busy at GM meetings
posted in 2006-07 offseason, Offseason speculation |The Freep’s Jon Paul Morosi, no doubt enjoying being in Florida right now, has updates on what Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has been up to at the GM meetings.
–He spoke with Texas. Reports say this wasn’t about Mark Teixeira but rather was about some minor names.
–He spoke with Atlanta, speculation is an inquiry about LH 1B Adam LaRoche, who drove in 90, had 32 HR to go with a .285 / .354 / .561 line. He has two years of MLB experience and would therefore be around for awhile if the Tigers were to trade, say, Jeremy Bonderman, which I find to be sillytalk at this point in time after already trading Humberto Sanchez.
–He also seems to be talking to the agent of Aubrey Huff. He’s versatile, 1B, 3B, OF, oh and left-handed. He hit .285 / .342 / .477 for Tampa and Houston. Morosi speculates he could cost about the same as Casey was making, $8.5M. I consider him a better fit than Casey at this stage.
–At the very least, we can pretty much project at this point on April 2 there will be new left-handed bat with decent OBP in Detroit’s lineup.
–Finally Morosi has a bit on Jamie Walker, LOOGY, who could cost $3-4M. Bilfer asks if he’s worth it at DTW. My answer is no. Not at that cost. Not when you consider the natural home for Wil Ledezma is relief and he’s a left hander. While having an occasional excellent start, I believe he’s perfect in the pen and can replace Walker fine at no additional cost.

Damn, I would love to see Texiera come to Detroit. Trade Bonderman and casey for him on his last year contract then resign him after 07′ season. We would be such a powerhouse with him. Rotation, 1.Kenny Rogers 2.Verlander 3.Robertson 4. Miner 5. Moroth.
Casey cant be traded. Hes a free agent. A starting rotation of Rogers, Bonderman, Verlander, Robertson, Maroth looks a lot better to me. Especially when you consider Roger has 1 year left.
Just gonna concur with Cake on this one. If we signed Casey we wouldn’t pursue a trade at first, I’m pretty sure.
And I would not trade Bonderman until 08 if Miller is ready to take his spot. Bonderman would be in his final year. And really, I have to think the Tigers picture Miller as filling the void left when Rogers’ contract is over. Honestly, we can go around taking Bonderman for granted, but if you look at his indicator stats, this kid is one hell of a pitcher and those don’t come around, just give him time to mature. I don’t ever want to see him pitching against us in a game that matters.
