Abreu talk hits me out of, well, right field

posted in trade rumors |

I don’t generally solicit comments, but I’d like a bit of help here. Where the dickens did this one come from: Bobby Abreu for Marcus Thames and Zach Miner. Plus a contract extention for Abreu. Keep in mind I am linking to Rob Parker with the assumption it came from Rob Parker, who must have the lowest reliability in Detroit journalism.

If this deal is correct, as some believe it is, general manager Dave Dombrowski should pull the trigger as soon as possible and not look back.

Obviously if it was real, you do it. But it wasn’t done, so I have to imagine it’s not real. So is this something that has some real base in reality, or is it the first you’ve heard of it, too?

First I’ve heard of it and NO WAY do I make that deal. As you note, the source is Rob Parker. ’nuff said.

I’m not as pro as I was last night. But I’m still pro.

Thames is a guy who can hit only to left field, as you have shown. He’s not going to be able to keep his numbers up so one sided. He’s no Big Papi. Miner is a guy having a great start, but when you compare him to all the young guns in the MLB, he comes up lacking. I think they’re both sell highs right now. And they allow you to keep Humberto Sanchez. There’s no debating Abreu’s bat. He’s better than anyone we have from either side of the plate.

But argument against it is that you’d have to plop maybe Sanchez in the rotation until Maroth got back and hope Maroth got back with the same ability as when he went on the DL. That’s obviouslyr risky. (On the other hand, you have to hope Miner is as good as his 6-1 start, and I have my doubts). And then you have the chemistry issue of pulling two likeable guys out of clubhouse.

So, it looks good, but I think you’d really need to be an insider to know ultimately how it would turn out.

I’m not all that keen on picking up Abreu, and I really don’t think there’s even a sliver of truth to that deal. But assuming it is, I’d make that deal in an instant. Except on the salary end of things, we’d definately get the better end of the bargain.

I like Miner and have been greatful for what he’s done, but he’s by no means untouchable.

Marcus Thames on the otherhand I’d be happy to be rid of. I’m happy to have his offensive contributions so far this season (despite how non-critical many have been), but he will not continue. Pitchers are already well on their way to figuring him out. Combine his very high K rate, poor poor defense, below average baseruning, and lack of any smarts, I’d love to see him gone. With the gaudy number’s he’s put up this season, now is exactly the time to unload him. Great trade bait for any deal.

    Sigh….it was a nice dream.
